Resumen

Introducción El uso de sustancias de abuso es una problemática creciente en la población mundial, siendo el principal factor de riesgo para que se presente el síndrome de abstinencia neonatal (SAN), una enfermedad que genera grandes retos en la práctica clínica.


Objetivo Identificar en la literatura existente aspectos clave sobre el síndrome de abstinencia neonatal, que permitan afianzar el conocimiento sobre el tema y así poder generar bases sólidas para la práctica clínica de neonatólogos, pediatras y personal de la salud en general.


Materiales y métodos Para esta revisión, se realizó una búsqueda sistemática de la literatura publicada entre 1975 y 2016 que tratara sobre el síndrome de abstinencia neonatal, su epidemiología, manifestaciones clínicas, diagnóstico y tratamiento; así como de información complementaria extraída de textos publicados por la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas Contra la Droga y el Delito (UNODC), la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (PAHO), los ministerios de Salud y Justicia de Colombia y el Observatorio de Drogas de Colombia (ODC). Para la búsqueda de estudios clínicos, reportes de caso, artículos de revisión y artículos de opinión tanto en inglés como en español, las bases de datos utilizadas fueron: Librería Nacional de Medicina de Estados Unidos (Pubmed/Medline), SciELO, Lilacs, ClinicalKey y UpToDate.


Conclusiones El síndrome de abstinencia neonatal es una complicación frecuente en hijos de madres consumidoras de sustancias de abuso, por lo que debe ser sospechar en hijos de madres consumidoras o con síntomas,  manejado con medidas no  farmacológicas  con los medicamentos adecuados  y buscando intervenir a la  madre
