Trauma is a worldwide public health problem and must be recognised as an event that is predictable and thus preventable. Thermal injuries or burns are one of the worst trauma to which an individual can be exposed. Fatal burns account for a large proportion of mortality in developing countries, and are the third cause of mortality due to trauma in the paediatric population worldwide. Non-fatal injuries also carry devastating pathophysiological effects, along with the physical and psychological consequences that cause prolonged or permanent disability, affecting the quality of life of the survivors.
The key to reducing the associated morbidity and mortality of burns is prevention. Reliable statistical data needs to be determined that can establish the groups, characteristics, and regions with high risk. Effective interventions need to be designed that have an impact on the paediatric population and their carers, all with the objective to generate prevention programs. This opinion article discusses important aspects about how to avoid burns, but also informs and complements the results of a recent study that characterises the deaths due to burns in Colombia. Finally, it proposes an educational intervention, with the firm objective of making the general population aware of the severity of this problem and the need to reduce burns in children in our country.
