Abstract

The evaluation and management of neonatal thrombocytopenia is a frequent challenge. It occurs in less than 1 % of newborns, but it is one of the most common hematological problems in the neonatal age group. Autoimmune thrombocytopenia is one of the causes. We present a rare case, where there was association with pregnancy and chronic ITP. Which indicates that the mother and son binomial should be evaluated in an integral way.
Case summary: female newborn, who developed autoimmune thrombocytopenia after birth. The mother had a history of chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Patient received Anti D immunoglobulin, without response, and then with intravenous human immunoglobulin for five consecutive days, the platelet count rose to normal. There were no neurological sequelae.
Conclusions: the medical staff should keep in mind that the cause of neonatal thrombocytopenia is multifactorial.
