Abstract

Background: The coronavirus pandemic represents an unprecedented challenge for global public health as a cause of substantial morbidity and mortality that has negatively impacted all areas of society. Obesity has been identified as a risk factor for different diseases, especially cardiovascular ones; however, evidence in adults has also associated it with the severity of COVID-19. Case report: we present the case of a 12-year-old patient, obese (BMI 34 kg / m2), who presented with severe pneumonia due to COVID-19. A review of the available literature on the relationship between the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection and obesity in pediatric patients was carried out. Conclusion: obesity is a prevalent modifiable risk factor in our society, associated with a higher mortality rate and complications during SARS-CoV-2 infection in pediatric patients.
