Abstract

Introduction: Hepatitis E constitutes a significant public health problem. It is a globally emerging virus that has a self-limited acute presentation and can lead to fulminant liver failure and chronic liver failure. Children are the most vulnerable population concerning fecal-oral transmission viruses, and it is underdiagnosed due to the need for timely availability of tests. Objective: Review the literature and update concepts in epidemiology, transmission methods, clinical manifestations, complications, and forms of prevention. Methods: Databases such as Medline, PubMed, Clinical Key, Science Direct, and Embase were reviewed. Results: topic update articles with recommendations based on levels of evidence were included. Conclusions: Health professionals should be aware of suspecting the diagnosis of hepatitis E, carrying out clinical follow-up, supporting treatment, and promoting prevention measures at the individual and community level.
