Characterization of acute Chagas disease in pediatric patients attended at the Orinoquía’s Regional Hospital between 2015 and 2020
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Chagas disease is caused by a protozoan parasite called Trypanosoma Cruzi, which was discovered in Brazil by Carlos Chagas.
Objective: To characterize Chagas disease in a pediatric population at a tertiary-level hospital in the Colombian Orinoco region.
Methodology: An observational, descriptive study was conducted, which included patients under 18 years of age diagnosed with Chagas disease treated in 2015-2020. A database was registered, and a univariate analysis of the study variables was performed.
Results: 28 children who met the selection criteria were included; the average age was 6.98 ± 5.4 years, 60.72 % were female, 96.43 % were urban residents, and 42.86 % were asymptomatic patients. The treatment ordered in all patients was according to the indications of the guidelines set up by the National Institute of Health.
Conclusions: Chagas disease is a disease present in Latin America; its presentation in pediatric age varies; it is usually an asymptomatic pathology or debuts with nonspecific symptoms, which hinders its diagnosis and, therefore, prompt treatment. Diagnosing T. Cruzi infection in its acute stage is essential to prevent probable future complications; care routes should be set up, known, and socialized, especially in endemic areas or when coming from them.
