Intoxications Due to Laundry Detergent Pod: a New Risk to Consider

Abstract

Intoxications are a common cause of consultation to emergency services. In Colombia, the National Service of Vigilance on Health (SIVIGILA) has reported their increase. Up to the 41th week of 2016, 22,127 cases of intoxication had been reported, with an occurrence of 55.6 for every 100.000 inhabitants. The pediatric population is exposed to various xenobiotics, due to their exploratory activities, among which cleaning products are counted.


Laundry detergent pods have become popular in our country. One of the risks represented by this type of detergent is its packaging, which resembles the appearance of a candy, rendering it attractive for children.


Traditionally, cleaning products have been considered to have a low potential of mortality and morbidity. However, according to case reports published in countries like the United States and England, it has been shown that detergent intoxications present risks associated to gastrointestinal alterations, neurological damage, and respiratory distress. Hence, it can be concluded that the generalized idea according to which these household hygiene products have no toxicity is mistaken, reason why it is necessary a paradigm shift.
